The Hoyer Lift was developed in the ‘40s after a car accident paralyzed patient, Ted Hoyer, from the neck down. After the Accident, Hoyer realized how important it was for him to maintain his independence so with the help of his cousin Victor Hildemann the idea came to life. The main purpose of the Hoyer Lift is to help transport those with mobility issues. The Hoyer lift is commonly seen at medical facilities and people’s homes.
The Students of CNA/GNA practiced using the Hoyer Lift to transport patients. In their practice, they worked on moving a patient from the bed to a wheelchair. The steps are as follows…
- Gently roll the patient on their side
- Place the sling onto the bed
- Grab the Lift and Place it near the bed
- Attach straps
- Have one person support the neck while lifting the patient
- Slowly lower the patient into the wheelchair
