Agricultural Science completed a DNA Extraction Lab. The lab included Strawberry, Banana, and Blueberries. The lab started out with each fruit being carefully kneaded. This was done by applying pressure using the student’s fingers and fists to mash the fruit inside the Ziploc bags.
After the fruit is kneaded, students prepared their filtration systems using a beaker, funnel, and filter. Once the filter was made they poured cold ethanol into the same beaker as the mashed fruit.
After waiting for the cold ethanol to filter, students were ready for the final step of the lab. For the final part of the experiment, students used either a loop or a glass rod and dipped it into the extract. Once it was dipped into the extract a reaction happened.
