Capstone Idea
So far, as of 9/15 the 32-bit art has been pretty fun to create and not as hard to work with as I thought it’d be. I’ve personally finished the tile patterns for all of the rooms and am half way done all the props in each area. The next part to start is the walls and borders for the rooms so it has a little bit of a fancy feel.
Capstone Week 1-2(9/29/23)
Capstone Update - October
Capstone Update - November
Capstone Update - November 28-30
Overall, the capstone experience has been good! Not too much to add though for photography until the map is laid out and I’m proud of what has been achieved thus far. There were hiccups with making the tiles and when I first started Unity, but after the first time, it became second nature to use Unity and organize my files.
Capstone Update - December & January
Overall, the Capstone Experience hasn’t been too much of a burden and I feel Jon and I have been making great, consistent progress with our game. We have hit some bumps, such as animation taking longer than expected, but luckily made that time up since laying out the map was easier than expected! I have definitely grown more comfortable with using Unity and nothing really major has set us back, aside from some issues with sprite sheets (some pixels didn’t fully erase).
Hopefully, I can improve on my coding and keeping track of the time I spend on each task seeing as I sometimes forget to clock in on Clockify.
Capstone Update - February
Overall, the Capstone experience has had it’s ups and downs, but it’s still fun to work with. The coding has been frustrating at times but other than that, it’s been enjoyable and simple.
Some positives with working on this year-long project is plenty of time to make sure that the end result will be polished up or at the very least it can give an idea as to what the final draft of it would be. Some negatives with this is the frustration that’s come with the project and doing all of the coding without getting tired of working on the same thing most of the time.
I definitely feel I’ve improved with using Clockify and I have been using most if not all class time to work on the Capstone and have accomplished a lot in that time! I also am feeling more confident working with C# code, making scripting easier and I’m running into less logical and regular errors.
My goal for the end of next month is to make sure all the basic mechanics such as health, damage, animations, and projectiles all work accordingly so we can focus on the roleplay elements and the menus.
Capstone Update - March
There were some bumps when it came to putting in the damage registering against enemies and getting the projectiles to move in the proper directions, but all of those issues were solved within the day! I feel confident in my abilities to code now and I’m so proud of how the game, Self Checkout, is coming together.
I hope within the next 2 weeks we can have the main menu and dialogue parts in the game, polishing up any glitches and feel proud of the project Jon and I have done.
Capstone Update - The Finale
SkillsUSA went by and, despite some unexpected craziness, we still got 3rd place in the state for Video game design and interactive media application. We also had the dialogue up and running in time for the competition as well.
Over all, capstone was a bumpy road in the beginning, but as time went on and I started to get used to the applications we used, Jon and I were able to push through and show off at least a functional level from Self Checkout. To any juniors or freshmen looking to join the interactive media class, it is very fun and you will never have a dull moment. Just remember to prioritize and hold yourself accountable for getting your future projects or capstones done too.
