Capstone: Blackridge
My plan for Capstone is to create a Visual Novel with an eerie vibe about the history of a small fictional town called Blackridge in Oregon. It is a choice-based game, with different results depending on the decisions you make throughout the game. The plot develops between the Fruitbats, a rag-tag band and the main characters of the story- each with their own secrets. As they come to light, these secrets lead to a series of events that decides the fate of the entire town of Blackridge. There are currently six sets of sprites and four sets of backgrounds. The game itself is in development, with a few playable scenes and one choice implemented.
River Moore
Drummer for The Fruitbats. River is the protagonist of the story and has the most playable content. For the most part, the plot follows them, whose pronouns the player can choose, as they search for their father. Through this journey, River will form their personality and either strengthen or weaken their friendship with Evie and Xanthe. Depending on the player’s choices, good or bad things may happen to each of them, and the small town of which they live in bliss ignorance to the real history of. As the events of the past become clearer, things get more dangerous for River, for knowledge comes at a price.
“This is going to hurt, it better be worth it.”
Evie Hemrick
Lead singer of The Fruitbats. Evie, whose real first name she manages to hide from everyone, is a deeply serious person. She keeps her friends in check and keeps them, especially River, from making stupid decisions. If she gets involved in something, however, she will persist in seeing it to the end. She’s generally bad at letting go of things, so make sure not to get on her bad side. Discover how her backstory ties into this miserable town before she encounters something that will forever change her, for better or worse.
“Isn’t this what you wanted?”
Xanthe Weaver
Plays bass for The Fruitbats. Quite the foil to his cousin Evie, Xanthe is a very unserious person. He’s the goofball, joke-cracker and mood lightener of the trio, who always knows how to crack a joke and make light of a bad situation, acting as a pillar of light in the dark. When it comes to defending his friends and family, however, he doesn’t joke around. He’s easy to scare, but always tries to stay strong for others. He usually declines on the adventuring, however this time the journey directly involves him. Will he be able to defend his friends against what’s to come?
“Whatever happens, we’re in this together.”
